About irrational hate?

I am so over American Idol. I had to walk away -- because I would rather do my homework than listen to stupid Paula and stupid Randy. Also, Ryan makes me want to stab somebody in the eye. In addition, all of the contestants are ugly and talentless. Oh, and did I mention... the show is too long and too noisy and it makes me want to put a car bomb in the next Ford I see. This show is everything that makes people hate us. This show would make Mr. Rogers put on a beret and start machine-gunning pedestrians. This show makes me hate America. And Coca-cola. And the telephone.

That sounds perfectly rational to me. I'd rather vacuum the apartment or wash the dishes than watch Reality TV shows. They are the opposite of refinement.

I heart Constantine... other than that, yeah.

And I believe Paula has been labotomized, or she's deaf.

Althoguh one of her songs came on the radio and all I could think was "She never would have made it to hollywood."

I never understood it to begin with. Ive seen SOME American Idol but Ive never actually WATCHED it.. at least for more than 10 minutes, at which poitn I realize that Id rather watch Touched By An Angel or Walker Texas Ranger.. and you KNOW something is bad when it comes down to that.

My take on pop/rock/whatever stars:

I think that bands and recording artists should be able to sing AND/OR write AND/OR play an instrument. There are only a VERY FEW people who are SO amazing at one talent or another that it doesn't matter that they dont have the other talents.

Dave Matthews, Ben Folds, Bob Dylan, Tom Waits, Billy Corgan, Diana Krall. People who are such amazing songwriters and lyricists, it doesnt matter what their singing voice really sounds like. They became famous for their bad or smokey or grating voices... because their music was SO GOOD.

Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Cloony, Frank Sinatra Elvis Presley... no matter how much we like or dislike their music, we can still call up their voices in our memories in a nano second. Strong, powerful, varying, smooth,... AMAZING singing voices that blew the world apart each time. People who, for the most part, just sang what was given to them... and it was ok because their singing voices were so awe-inspiringly good.. it didnt matter that they couldnt write a song to save their life. Their vocal talent and range was enough, or MORE than enough to stand the test of time.

The rest of the time, it takes a whole package of songwriting, musical proficiency, voice/range, and lyrics to make someone or a band great. The Beatles or John Lennons and George Harrisons solo careers, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Plant,... musical GODS and LEGENDS...

Then there are these new teen pop stars like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Ashley Simpson, Jessica Simpson... all they have are looks and voices.. and neither are very extraordinary. They are mediocre with no real feeling. They are over processed and nowhere NEAR the kind of artists they should have to be to be so rich/famous/cared for.

American Idol is just that extension... mediocre beauty, mediocre talent, mediocre voice... and see who can be the best at being mediocre in the music industry. See who can last more than 5 years and still be marketable as pablum to the hungry-for-anything-novel-and-shiny masses...

Where music is more sex and MixMaster3000 machines than art...
